Hey guys! My friends did it again! Lisa of Good On Paper and Jennifer Young Studio collaborated on their second limited edition “Find Your Wild” 2016 calendar!

I thought their first edition was so good that when the ladies emailed me about their second edition, I knew it was gonna be another good one! The calendar combines clean design, beautiful landscape photography, and motivational quotes that will keep you inspired month after month. Trust me, I need it! If you or someone you know appreciates good design and photography, this is the calendar to get! Makes a great decor and functional piece at home or office, and hello, the perfect Christmas add-on pressie if you ask me.

2016 Calendar by Jennifer Young Studio and Good on Paper

Every year, I purchase three different calendars for our home: a large one for my office that I write notes on, another in the kitchen for the family schedule, and an additional one that I keep in our bedroom. For this last calendar, I usually try to find one that is both functional and decorative. So I was thrilled to learn that Jennifer Young and Lisa Wong Jackson of  Good on Paper decided to collaborate once again on a 2016 calendar.

Exhibiting Jackson’s signature clean and simple design, the calendar also showcases photographs from Young’s travels around the world. I love the natural imagery combined with the copper foil-printed captions on each page. Last year, there were only 100 copies made, and they sold out quickly! There are 250 copies of this special limited-edition calendar this year, and you can purchase them here or here.

Creating Your Own Path#67 - Looking at the Big Picture with Lisa Jackson of Good on Paper

Today’s show brings me to Berkeley, California to chat with Lisa Jackson of Good on Paper. As a stationery and print goods designer, Lisa creates both ready-made collections for companies like Tiny Prints and Wedding Paper Divas and does a ton of custom work for freelance clients.

What you might not know about Lisa, however, is that she has a full-time job with an environmental consulting firm and she’s a self-taught designer. In the interview we chat about why Lisa has kept her full-time gig even though she has nearly a full-time workload with Good on Paper, how sharing bits of her personal story on her site and social media accounts has resulted in some interesting collaborations and what it’s been like to grow a family and career in Berkeley.

Monster Movie Night for Kids with Whole Foods Market Berkeley

A few weeks ago I designed/styled a fun Monster Movie Night party along with the talented catering crew from Whole Foods Market Berkeley for one of my favorite blogs 100 Layer Cakelet and all shot by the talented Michelle Drewes. It was super fun! I designed these fun invitations with finger monsters in kraft jewelry boxes.

Whole Foods Market Berkeley's catering team did an AMAZING job with the spooky spread (remember Lucas' 5th birthday party they catered?)--monster pizzas, witches fingers (hummus and veg dip), graveyard dip (7 layer bean dip), banana ghosts (frozen bananas dipped in white chocolate), and caramel apple and pears. They provided gorgeous fall flowers with ghosts made of cheesecloth, "healthy" candy and not-too-scary Halloween books. We played "Monsters, Inc." on a white sheet and the kids were hooked.

15 CALENDARS FOR 2015

So far this month, I’ve only had to scribble out “2014” and write “2015” a handful of times, so this year feels like it’s off to a great start. Usually I spend close to three or four months correcting checks and letters, so to keep myself on track and organized this year, I’m trying to get better about using a calendar. I find I’m better when I stick to my digital calendar (because it follows me around, beeping at me on my phone all day), but it never hurts to have a beautiful desk or home calendar to keep important dates on hand. So this year I chose 15 of my favorite 2015 calendars, from printables and posters to oversized art calendars and smaller agenda calendars. I hope you’ll find something in here to keep you ready and up for the challenges and excitement that 2015 will bring. xo, grace

2015 CALENDAR BY JENNIFER YOUNG STUDIO/GOOD ON PAPER

Every year after Thanksgiving, I turn the calendar page over and am always stunned to see how fast December crept up on me. And every time, I scramble to find new calendars to replace the old ones. That’s why I was so happy to hear about the special limited-edition calendar designed by Jennifer Young Studio and Lisa Wong Jackson from Good on Paper. Each page features two months and a photograph from Jennifer’s travels around the world, along with foil-printed hand lettering by Lisa. The result is a beautiful combination of art and function.

There are 100 copies available in this edition, and each is hand-numbered on the cover. The calendar is printed on 130-pound recycled paper stock, and I love that it is perforated at the top so that you can easily tear off each page to re-use and frame as art.

this is one of the prettiest calendars i’ve seen in a long while, and it’s also by two local artists — so that’s something i really love supporting. Believe it or not, I’ve been thinking a lot about next year already. While December is all about celebrating and Christmas shopping, I’m also taking some down time to plan for 2015. There are personal and business goals I want to accomplish, and honestly, thinking about it all is very overwhelming. But we all need to move forward, don’t we? That’s why I’m always looking for inspirations to keep me going, things as simple as a beautiful calendar.

When my friend (also my first Playdate mama), Lisa Wong Jackson of Good On Paper, shared with me her beautifully designed and inspiring 2015 calendar, I quickly placed an order (and also got one as a gift). FIY – they only have 100 copies! 

This is a special collaboration between Lisa and photographer Jennifer Young. All the breathtaking photos in the calendar are inspired by Jennifer’s travels around the world and their love of clean, simple design, coupled with hand lettering and foil printing. I fell in love with the photography and the simple one-word design. I think it’s done really tastefully, and knowing that it came from someone I know, it means even more.

I haven’t done many gift guides here as much as I thought I would this year, mainly because I realize I only want to share things that have value to me these days ~ and this is definitely one of them. Be sure to get yours here before they sell out! I’m excited to receive mine in a few days, and to gift one to someone very special in my life.

REAL MOMS, REAL RECIPE: BLACK SESAME ICE CREAM SANDWICHES

Feeding little mouths day in and day out is not an easy parenting task, which is why we’re always looking for inspiration in this department. And that brings us to our new series, Real Mom, Real Recipe, in which we tap a mother and have her invite us into her kitchen and show us what she’s got cookin’. First up: Lisa Wong Jackson, owner of stationery company Good On Paper Design, and a senior graphic designer at an engineering/environmental firm in the Bay Area. Here, the Berkeley-based mom of Lucas, 4 1/2, and Theo, 2, serves up a drool-worthy plate of Black Sesame Ice Cream Sandwiches to her adorable fam. Hear what mealtime and motherhood means to her in the slideshow below.

MY HOUZZ: DIY EFFORTS REWARD A BERKELEY FAMILY

Lisa Wong Jackson found her family’s Cliff May–designed home in Berkeley, California, on Craigslist. As is true of so many online finds, it was a bit of a hit-or-miss opportunity, but the ranch-style property showed potential as a first-time home for the graphic designer and her husband, Nick Jackson, an attorney.

The couple had always admired Cliff May’s distinctive architectural style. There were ready to move in, but the home had one major drawback: a complete lack of landscaping. With a nonexistent entryway and a backyard overrun with weeds and rotting retaining walls, they knew it would be a lot of work. Despite the daunting challenge, Lisa and Nick decided it would be worth the extra effort, so they rolled up their sleeves every weekend to create their dream home.

SUPER HERO 4TH BIRTHDAY PARTY IN BERKELEY

Our good friend, Lisa Jackson may or may not start to feel a little pressure from us. As her boys get older we just get more and more excited to see photos from each of their birthday parties. She continues to amaze us with her creativity, entertaining ideas that any kid would love (handmade capes for running & jumping around a playground?!), and her paper goods- they’re obviously something we always look forward to seeing.

A Bay Area couple learn the joys of sweat equity as they landscape the home of their dreams.

Lisa Wong Jackson got hooked on creating when she designed and screen printed note card sets as favors for her 2005 wedding. She enrolled in graphic design courses and eventually transitioned from the marketing department to design at the consulting firm where she’s worked for 12 years.

“I have always loved making things and took some art classes in school, but I never thought I could or would make a living doing it,” says the 35-year-old. Now, in addition to her full-time graphic design position, she creates custom invitations and a line of stationery and office supplies for her own business, Good on Paper.

Her contemporary and occasionally quirky designs are printed on recycled paper with earth-friendly inks—and much of the imagery reflects nature, from birds’ nests to butterfly wings to the floating seeds of a just-blown dandelion.

“I’m really lucky to have grown up in the Bay Area. I love how the nature around me influences colors and texture in my work,” she says.

Let’s welcome my guest, Lisa Wong Jackson. She runs a successful custom design and stationery company, Good On Paper, and has two insanely adorable sons, Lucas, 3 and Theo, 8 months. I first followed Lisa on Twitter and when I found out we were both pregnant at the same time with our second baby, I instantly felt connected to her. We then later discovered that we actually have mutual friends in the city and that she also partners with my cousin on design jobs. Such a small world!

First it was a circus-inspired invitation, then a hide-and-seek inspired invitation, and for his 3rd birthday she drew inspiration from Lucas’s current favorite: letters and numbers! It’s baby week here at Oh So Beautiful Paper! Well, not completely – but since I’m welcoming my first baby this week and my friend Lisa from Good on Paper recently welcomed her second baby, adorable little Theo, there is definitely quite a bit of happy baby energy in the air this week. For Theo’s baby announcements, Lisa opted for a simple and modern design accented with a graphic envelope liner. Such a sweet way to welcome their newest little boy!

I love starting the week with something bright and colorful, so I was thrilled when Lisa from Good on Paper sent over these sunny yellow wedding invitations that she designed for a recent couple. A {round} themed 2nd Birthday

My friend Lisa Wong Jackson from Good on Paper recently threw the cutest round themed birthday party for her 2-year-old son, Lucas. She always creates the best family Christmas cards and is the best at the sweet, yet graphic, details to the parties she throws. So, I had to share Luca's recent birthday because I loved the simplicity of the theme and how she made it perfectly fit a young child's birthday while also being fun for the adults too...

Held in a local park, Luca's birthday was complete with all round foods that kids love, balls and toys a plenty, as well as a snow cone truck {um, I want that at MY party!}. He had a ton of fun running and playing and even managed to lose his pants by the end of the day...now that's a good party if you ask me!

Biggest Project: "The biggest project I've worked on was for a magazine photo shoot with a 'Backyard Chic' theme. I collaborated with Gloria Wong Design, but it was still a big challenge. When all was said and done, it was rewarding to see the stationery, including letterpress invitations, screen-printed programs on linen, and laser-printed favor bags, in print. I worked with an amazingly talented wedding designer, photographer, florist, and calligrapher. It was a team effort. We all worked together on the little details and finishing touches like handmade pinwheels and tissue poms-poms."

So fun!

Beyond the Big Day - Spirograph Wedding

I’m beyond thrilled to share these gorgeous inspiration photos from Jen Curtis with everyone today. Although this look was created for a wedding, it can easily be carried over into a dinner party or even used as decoration in your home like the fireplace mantel idea above. The lovely Gloria from Gloria Wong Design was kind enough to give us a look into the idea behind this shoot…

For this particular project, I decided to use my very own favorite childhood toy as inspiration. The spirograph brought me endless amounts of joy and wonderment as a kid. I remember spending hours and hours rotating those little plastic plates and watching shapes come alive on paper!

The shapes that a spirograph creates are inherently symmetrical and modern. So, for this mock table, I decided to go for an “Urban Modern Crafty” vibe in a loft-like venue with bare white walls. I chose fuschia pink, gravel grey and light cement grey because the combination of those colors fit the flavor… and because I’m in love with those colors at the moment! I used a streamlined wooden table, no curves, no fluff and layered on clean white plates. For the rest of the fun, I enlisted the most talented team of vendors.

The amazing Lisa Wong Jackson of Good On Paper designed all the different styles of spirograph shapes that were materialized in the form of laser cutouts, rubber stamps, and a spirograph garland that hung above the dinner table. For menus, Lisa had chipboards screenprinted. We opted for screenprint over offset printing or letterpress because we felt that the method lent itself to the artsy-crafty tone of this wedding.

This is my favorite group of pictures from the series. Not sure why…I think it’s the awesome pops of pink paired with the dark suit. The AMAZING flowers that Nancy Liu Chin designed. The photography by Lisa Lefkowitz that is literally making my mouth water. Or maybe the picture perfect styling by Gloria Wong. Whatever the reason, it’s entirely delicious!
