From Splinter to Surgery -- A Crazy Weekend

This past weekend was so much fun and so stressful at the same time. Lucas played his last T-ball game of the season against his good friend Judah's team followed by a sweet celebration party where each kid got some mad props by the coaches along with a pint-sized trophy. The best part of the game was when Lucas ran to home plate and hugged the catcher, his friend Judah! Total sportsmanship! We also had a fun play date at our house with homemade waffles. On Sunday we went to the swimming pool with some friends and had a fun day in the sun.

And then it happened. Lucas was walking on a wooden retaining wall barefoot (ice cream in hand!) and got a splinter. It bled right away and he was in a lot of pain. At first glance it seemed like a normal splinter, but when when we took a closer look, it was a cut with what looked like a small pebble embedded underneath the skin. Ouch.

We first tried to get the splinter out after soaking his foot in warm water. I ended up texting our friend/neighbor who is an ER doctor and he offered to take a look at it. Two and a half hours later and well past Lucas' bedtime, the nerve block he injected didn't seem to work and Lucas wouldn't keep still. We went home and I called to make an appointment with our pediatrician the next morning.

Before our appointment, we stopped at Blue Bottle Coffee in Oakland’s historic W.C. Morse building. I figured we would have a nice mama and me breakfast date before heading to the doctor's office to do all the not-so-fun stuff. I was in awe of this building -- the high ceilings, the flood of natural light, the mix of old and new and those waffles. With chocolate ganache drizzled on top.

Our next stop was the pediatrician's office. After one look at the wound, he immediately referred us to a podiatrist. They took x-rays of both feet which came out clean -- but didn't rule out that there might still be something deeply embedded. I didn't realize x-rays don't catch wood, just shadows. The podiatrist recommended surgery which was scheduled the next day.

On our way home, we got some delicious lunch at one of my favorite spots, Summer Kitchen. And then some yummy ice cream right next door at Ici -- vanilla creme brulee for Lucas and Earl Grey for me. I figured since he wouldn't be able to eat for the next 12 hours in preparation for surgery, we would at least stuff ourselves silly with his favorite foods.

The next day Lucas got prepped for surgery and was SO brave and sweet the entire time. He got to watch shows on tv and received lots of attention from the amazing staff. We arrived promptly at 10 a.m. as surgery was scheduled for noon. How cute and sad is he with that hospital gown? I kept a strong exterior for Lucas but was so nervous and scared inside.

And then the waiting began.... for the next 7 hours we waited patiently to get into the operating room (apparently the surgery before his took a lot longer than expected). The staff wheeled the gurney around to different areas throughout the day. By the time Lucas got in, he hadn't eaten or drank a thing for 23 hours. Poor guy! What a trooper!

The actual surgery lasted about 15 minutes and we were SO relieved when it was all over. Turns out there was a toothpick-like piece of wood the punctured the bottom of his foot -- went straight in versus sideways like a splinter). Ouch. The first thing Lucas said when he woke up was, "Hi Mama, can I have my popsicle now?" Oh, my brave boy -- I love him so much.

This and That Lately - All About T Ball

When we signed up Lucas for T Ball, little did I know how much time it involved. From Nick being an assistant coach, the little league parade/carnival, to banner making and games/practices every Saturday, our lives are about to be consumed in T Ball for the next two months -- and he hasn't even played his first game yet! But Lucas' excitement to be "a baseball man" is pretty priceless. Plus, a huge part of Lucas' Team Express consists of his friends from school - he's making new ones too. I love that he's learning about safety, being part of a team and what it means to be a good winner and a good loser.

The Albany Little League Parade and Carnival is an annual tradition that's no joke. We're talking closed off streets led by the Albany Fire Department, banner contests, carnival with a dunk tank. Scroll down to see who gets dunked!

What a good sport Nick was to volunteer himself for the dunk tank! We were so proud of him for being such a positive force on the team and getting dunked in that freezing brown water.

GOOOOOO TEAM EXPRESS!!! WOO WOO!!!

Happy Weekend, a Visit From Friends Old and New, and a Birthday

Happy weekend friends! This week seemed to have flown by. I was so happy to have some old friends and new visit us. I have been a long time follower/admirer of Sally Shim (how cool and cute are her boys?), and while she was out here visiting California from Korea, she and her boys came to visit us in Berkeley (go Bears! Sally is an alum like me!). I thoroughly loved chatting with her and seeing J and j interact so sweetly with my Lucas and Theo. We spent 11 hours together, starting with dinner from Noodle Theory, homemade waffles for breakfast (j ate 8 of them! yes, 8!), lunch at Summer Kitchen, a fun visit to the Lawrence Hall of Science, dinner at the Ramen Shop, and finally ice cream at Smitten. We had so much fun, food, and big time laughs! You can follow Sally and her boys on their trip via Instagram. Another special treat was seeing my friend Bonnie and her hilariously cute daughter Venise who drove up from L.A. for the longest-drive-shortest-play date ever. Next time they need to stay longer but I'll take what I can get. Maybe I can catch her again at her visual social media workshop at Poketo on September 20th.

Here are some of my favorite Instagram pics from this week.

And finally, it's my birthday weekend (July 20th to be exact). My boys are getting bigger and I'm getting older. Ha! Lately I've noticed I've been talking to myself. Busier? Older? I'm still in my late 20's, right? Let's be honest, after having kids, I feel like I'm five years older than I really am, but I wouldn't have it any other way and that's the truth. Oh, and last night Nick surprised me with a brand new Vitamix for my birthday! I've always jokingly hinted at it but never thought I would own one - what a splurge! I made him promise not to get me anything for our anniversary or Christmas or Valentine's day, maybe even my birthday next year, seriously. I can't wait to redefine what a blender can do!

I'm starting off my birthday weekend with a much needed in-home massage and having another yummy Munchery dinner delivered to our door.

What are you up to this weekend?

Long weekend - Happy 4th of July!

Happy long 4th of July weekend friends! I've had a crazy busy week with work so I'm really looking forward to spending some quality family time -- swimming, play dates, tasty food, and a visit from some dear friends. Here are some of my favorite Instagram pics of my boys from this week.

Tomorrow we will be visiting our friends at Sketch. It's a bittersweet visit as they have decided to close the shop for good to focus on family. We will miss them SO much and wish them the best. I totally respect their decision to put family first -- it's always a juggle, but at the end of the day, it's family and love that come out on top.

We are starting off the long weekend tonight with a yummy Munchery dinner delivered to our door so I don't have to cook after a long day at work. If you haven't tried Munchery yet, I highly recommend them -- high quality, affordable, freshly made food conveniently delivered to your door in eco-friendly/compostable packaging. And amazing graphic design/packaging!

What are you up to this weekend?
