Sunset Magazine Idea House Tour

I have always wanted to tour one of Sunset Magazine's Idea Houses--the 2012 Breezehouse Prefab was one of my faves and a total inspiration for our home. Earlier this week I had the privilege of touring the brand new 2016 Sunset Magazine Idea House. Nestled in the premier hilltop neighborhood of Claremont Hills, bordering Oakland and Berkeley, the 4,000 square-foot home boasts four bedrooms, four and half bathrooms, a game room, wine cellar, and artist studio and a total of five decks overlooking the entire San Francisco Bay.

Sunset Magazine will open the doors to the public for six consecutive weekends starting August 19th. In collaboration with some of the Bay Area’s most sought-after design talent including Geremia Design, Robert Nebolon Architects, landscape designer Michelle Derviss, and builder Landmark Development Corporation, Sunset has brought together an award-winning team to create an ultra-modern home with an interior comprised of fine details and artisan materials to provide warmth to its contemporary architecture.

Geremia Design, whose award-winning interior design has been honored by Forbes "30 Under 30" and as Architectural Digest's "Ones to Watch," incorporated a collection of wares and furnishings made by friends and local fabricators to connect the Idea House back to the community, creating a modern space that feels well-loved and well lived in.

One of my favorite rooms in the Idea House is the master bathroom--it's covered in Heath Ceramics tiles in the most calming shade.

I noticed a lot of jute and sisal rugs layered with a smaller rug on top. Loving this look.

Entertainment room! Long sofa covered in Sunbrella fabric. Chantal said a lot of people are starting to use Sunbrella fabric indoors as well for its durability.

One of the challenges for landscape designer Michelle Derviss was the slope. Inspired by M.C. Escher, she created the most beautiful viewing garden using steel boxes and stair stepping them in an elegant way to create a piece of sculpture. Low maintenance plants with colorful foliage filled the garden.

The Sunset Idea House, located at 540 Gravatt Road, Berkeley, CA, will be available to tour from 10 am to 5 pm as follows:

Tickets can be purchased for $25 and are available online at Eventbrite or onsite
during tour hours. A portion of the ticket proceeds will go to the Oakland Public Education Fund. Our Home Featured on Houzz

Happy Friday everyone! I couldn't be more excited to share our home tour on Houzz from earlier this week. Work has gotten a little bit crazy for me (in a good busy way) so I barely got a chance to go through the photos and comments from the tour when it first came out. It's funny because most of the comments are really sweet ones from people saying how they love that it's a "real house" with "real people" and how refreshing it is to see such a lived in house. Oh, hello there plastic bins storing blankets stuffed under the couch! Oh, hello there overgrown weeds in the front yard! We like to call it modern clutter. Ha! But in all seriousness, this is real living for us -- we do the best we can with what we have (and don't have..ahem, storage) . But you'll get a chance to see a few updates including Lucas' big boy room which we all love so much.

LEE Magazine - Japan

I'm so honored to have my home and family featured in Japan's LEE Magazine. It was such a fun photo shoot with minimal styling (a.k.a. keepin' it real = stuff everywhere!). Thanks to friend Lena Corwin for suggestion my home. Everything is in Japanese so I have no idea what it says. If anyone wants to translate, let me know! I must admit I was a little sad not to see Pixel in our family shot. Not sure what he was up to when we took that photo, but I'd like to think he was basking in the sun by our front window. And that thought makes me feel happy.

How to Hang a Picture

I am so proud of my talented and hard working friends, Suzanne Lagasa and Jay Sacher who designed and illustrated their new book, How to Hang a Picture (And Other Essentials for the Stylish Home). The foreword was written by the lovely Anh-Minh Le of Anthology magazine. It features step-by-step instructions, tips and tricks, and beautiful watercolor illustrations of real spaces -- including our home. We were so honored and appreciative to have a few little nooks from our home illustrated by Jay. The one of Lucas' room is my favorite. I especially love how the clutter magically disappeared in the illustrated versions.
